perseverance award
WINNER: Patrick McSweeney (Bellarmine)
McSweeney, also a St. Xavier alumnus, has been battling acute lymphoblastic leukemia for more
than a decade. He is long-time honorary team member of the Bellarmine basketball team and
even suited up for the Knights in a 2014 exhibition game against the University of Louisville at
the KFC Yum! Center.
Male High School Athlete (Louisville)
WINNER: Blake Givens
Givens is a 6’0 multi-sport athlete from Desales HS who excelled at not only soccer but also on
the football field and he is committed to play football at Thomas Moore University.
Newcomer of the Year
WINNER: David Johnson
Johnson averaged 6.3 points, 2.8 assists, 2.8 rebounds, and 0.7 steals in his first year with the
Cardinals playing a key role off the bench and started some key games as well before the season was
cut short.
Female High School Athlete (Louisville)
WINNER: Destinee Marshall
Destinee Marshall was a 5’11 guard for Sacred Heart Academy who led her team to a 32-3 record.
She is committed to playing her college basketball at Radford University to continue her
impressive career.
Female High School Athlete (So. Indiana)
WINNER: Megan McEwen
Megan McEwen is an elite swimmer from Jeffersonville HS. She is a two time IHSAA Sectional
champion and is continuing her swim career at Bellarmine University.
Game of the Year
WINNER: UK over UofL basketball in OT
A back and forth heated rivalry game that extended into overtime
with Kentucky pulling out the victory at home 78-70.
Male College Athlete of the Year
WINNER: TuTu Atwell
TuTu had 70 receptions for 1,276 yards and 12 touchdowns at the WR position for the Cardinals
with his longest one being 90 yards. He also fumbled the ball 0 times throughout the season.
Female College Athlete of the Year
WINNER: Jazmine Jones
Jazmine averaged 14.1 points a game on 55% shooting for the Cardinals as well as 2.3 assists
and 1.2 steals and was drafted 12th overall in the WNBA draft to the New York Liberty.
Coach of the Year
WINNER: Coach Satterfield (UofL Football)
Satterfield took over and turned a 2-10 team into an 8-5 team in his first year coaching
the cardinals topped off with a Music City Bowl victory over Mississippi State.
Team of the Year
WINNER: Louisville Football
After going 2-10 the year prior, Louisville football had the highest additional win
margin in the country at +6 going 8-5 and capped off their impresssive season
with a Music City Bowl victory over Mississippi State.
Male High School Athlete (So. Indiana)
WINNER: Trey Kaufman
Trey is 6’8 PF from Silver Creek HS who ranks 39th Nationally according to Rivals.com,
he has offers from Indiana, Louisville, UNC, Virginia and more. He averaged over 25 points
per game.
Fan of the year
WINNER: Gary the Red Bird (Gary Budd)
Your votes have spoken and the longtime – and very red – Louisville fan, whose real name is Gary Budd, has officially been named the national winner of USA TODAY’s Best Fan Ever Contest. Now he has won the ESPN Louisville ESPY ‘ Fan of the Year’ as well.
