The Pittsburgh Steelers signed backup quarterback Mason Rudolph to a one-year contract extension on Thursday, the team announced.
The deal puts Rudolph under contract through the 2022 season. Starter Ben Roethlisberger's contract, which he renegotiated earlier this offseason, is set to expire after the 2021 season.
Rudolph's new deal pays an average of $3 million per year in 2021 and 2022 with the potential to be higher, a source told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. Rudolph had been scheduled to make a base salary of $1.014 million in 2021, the final season of his rookie contract.
Rudolph, 25, has appeared in 15 games in two seasons with the Steelers. He has made nine starts, including one last season when the Steelers rested Roethlisberger and other starters in a Week 17 game against the Cleveland Browns after having already clinched the AFC North Division title and a playoff spot.
A third-round pick in the 2018 draft, Rudolph has thrown for 2,089 yards with 15 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in his career.
