Caleb Lohner will transfer to Utah, play football for Utes

Former Baylor and BYU basketball player Caleb Lohner is set to return to the state where he started his college career, but as a football player for Utah.

The 6-foot-8, 235-pound Lohner, who entered the transfer portal April 10, announced his commitment Monday to join Utah football team, while adding that he may "potentially contribute on the court as well" for the Utes. A graduate transfer, Lohner is projected to play tight end for Utah, which returns standout Brant Kuithe.

Lohner appeared in 69 games for Baylor, averaging 3.2 points per game in 2022-23 and 2.4 points per game this past season. He initially committed to play basketball for BYU after moving to the state from Texas to finish high school, but eventually received a release from his national letter of intent so that he could sign with BYU.

Lohner started 44 games for BYU, averaging seven points per game and 6.4 rebounds in his final season there before transferring to Baylor.

He scored a season-high 13 points on 5-of-5 shooting in Baylor's win over UC-Santa Barbara in the first round of the 2023 NCAA tournament. Lohner recently attended Utah's spring football game in Salt Lake City.
